What is Health Literacy?

The ability to understand, interpret, and use health information to make informed decisions about one’s health. It encompasses a wide range of skills, including reading, listening, and decision-making ability, which are essential for navigating the healthcare system.

Why Health Literacy Matters

Health literacy is crucial because it directly impacts a person's ability to manage their health and wellbeing. Individuals with high health literacy are more likely to:

  • Understand medical instructions and prescriptions.

  • Navigate the healthcare system efficiently.

  • Communicate effectively with healthcare providers.

  • Make informed decisions about their health.

  • Engage in preventive health behaviors.

Conversely, low health literacy can lead to misunderstandings, medication errors, and increased hospitalizations.
